The work of Bernd and Hilla Becher (find out more in this interview) recently found its way into my design moodboards. Their book Typologies of Industrial Buildings chronicles their photographic ‘research’ with an intrinsically German outlook. I know this is not the sort of thing that would excite most fashion people but I suppose I’m sort of Fashion’s reluctant participant (that’s besides the point). A Becher typology is an exercise in documentary, a record of heritage; transplanting these industrial ghosts into a collective dismissal of utility in favour of structural study, realizing a fetish for the all consuming grid.
